Project Update June 2026

23 June 2026

Following the community engagement held between 27 April and 18 May 2026, we received 60 responses from the community. 63% of responses were in support of the proposed zebra crossing, 30% of responses didn't support it and 7% of respondents were neutral.

The full community engagement report is available in the document library.

Key Feedback Themes

This is a summary of the key feedback themes provided by the community during the consultation period.

Location

A lot of the comments we received suggested that the zebra crossing should be further north or further south of the roundabout. Prior to deciding on the proposed location, both vehicle and pedestrian volume data were collected. The data showed that the proposed location had a high volume of pedestrians crossing and vehicle movement that warranted the need for a crossing. This crossing is a temporary installation and as part of the future West Beach Road upgrade, pedestrian safety on all legs of the roundabout can be improved.

Our pedestrian counts recorded that more pedestrians cross at the proposed location than further north toward Cottesloe Street. A zebra crossing point further to the north would require the removal of on-street parking spaces, whereas the current proposed location does not impact on any parking spaces.

The traffic volumes are much higher at the proposed location compared to south of the roundabout. This makes crossing the road at the proposed location more difficult for pedestrians and increases the warrant for a priority crossing. On the southern side of the roundabout there are currently no access ramps to access the path, only a driveway, so it is currently not suitable for a formal pedestrian crossing.

Next Steps

We are currently working on the detailed design of the zebra crossing and plan to undertake construction during the 2026/27 financial year.
