As part of our commitment to safer, more sustainable transport options, we are planning to install a new zebra crossing on Seaview Road, West Beach, opposite the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club.
This location has been identified based on the volume of vehicles and pedestrians crossing at this location. We have also received an Elected Member budget bid to investigate a zebra crossing at this location as a result of requests from the community.
This is a temporary zebra crossing, to improve safety while we undertake the early stages of planning for a streetscape upgrade of West Beach Road (Seaview Road to Military Road). This streetscape upgrade will also include long‑term improvements to pedestrian access to and from the coast.
This location is a popular destination for both residents and visitors, with high levels of pedestrian activity throughout the day that warrant the need for a pedestrian crossing. The proposed crossing will make it safer and easier for people to travel along the coastline and to cross Seaview Road to access West Beach and the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

Due to the temporary nature of the installation the existing ramps will remain. These will be upgraded as part of the West Beach Streetscape project.
We invite your feedback on the zebra crossing design ahead of construction in the 2026/27 financial year, subject to budget being allocated.

The project includes speed cushions, bicycle sharrows, kerb buildouts to narrow the crossing distance, a painted zebra crossing and upgraded lighting. Due to the temporary nature of the installation the existing ramps will remain. These will be upgraded as part of the West Beach Streetscape project.
A zebra crossing is a clearly marked pedestrian crossing, easily recognised by its alternating light and dark stripes painted on the road surface—similar to a zebra’s coat.
Zebra crossings give priority to pedestrians and bicycle riders using the footpath over vehicles and cyclists travelling on the road.
Under the Australian Road Rules, zebra crossings operate at all times. Drivers must stop to give way to a pedestrian who is crossing, or who is about to cross, at the zebra crossing.
To further improve safety, speed cushions will be installed to the north of the zebra crossing.
Speed cushions are traffic‑calming devices designed to reduce vehicle speeds while still allowing emergency services vehicle and bicycle riders to pass with minimal disruption. They consist of several raised sections spaced across the width of the road, to slow drivers on the approach to the crossing. Drivers approaching from the south are already slowed by the roundabout.
