What is a 'Playground Renewal'?

A playground renewal is the replacement of an existing playground with like-for-like equipment or equipment of a similar 'play value' to what’s already there.

What influences playground design?

Your feedback is one part of the design process. We have several other objectives to meet that also influence playground designs.

Which playgrounds are being replaced?

Four playgrounds are planned for replacement between July 2026 and June 2027. They are listed below.

Click on any of the playgrounds below to see what's there now, and to share what you would like that play space to look like in future. The new playgrounds must be inclusive and safe for all, but your feedback will be used to shape what play equipment and activities are included, and how it might look and feel.

We really want to hear direct from our little play influencers and creative playground experts, so this year we have a "Play Influencer's Activity Book" for our young and creative people who love to play. Follow any of the playground links below to find out more about where to get your activity book, and how to submit your completed book to get your City of Charles Sturt "Play Influencer" Certificate!

What makes playgrounds different?

Playground classifications influence playground budgets and the size of a playground, including how much equipment and the types of equipment we can include.
  • Neighbourhood playgrounds

These are our smallest and simplest playgrounds - usually with just a few pieces of equipment or unique play elements.

They're designed to mainly cater to the local community, being in easy walking distance or as a short stop while passing through. Because they usually don't include extra amenities like toilets or picnic facilities, visits are often short and focused on a bit of fun and play before moving on.

  • District playgrounds

These playgrounds are found in larger, well-loved reserves that often include landscaped areas. They’re places where people come together for a short rest, a picnic, some play, or even a small community event.

They offer more variety and excitement than smaller local sites, with a wider range of equipment, creative layouts, and sometimes unique or innovative play features that make each visit a little different.

  • Regional playgrounds

These playgrounds are in our largest open spaces and set in beautiful landscapes. They’re usually in or near popular destinations such as beaches, rivers, or tourist areas, which people are happy to travel to.

The playgrounds usually have more than one play area, with a variety of equipment and unique play that caters to all ages. Many have sports facilities, too, making them ideal to visit for a full day out with family and friends enjoying play, relaxation, and recreation all in one place.
