Illuminating Hindmarsh

Illuminating Hindmarsh – a creative lighting design

Introduction

The ‘Illuminating Hindmarsh’ Project seeks to develop a creative lighting plan for Port Road and connecting streets. ‘Illuminating Hindmarsh’ will enhance usability, connectivity, safety, evening activation and identity of the Hindmarsh precinct.

The idea was generated as a priority project by Hindmarsh business and community organisations in 2017 during the preparation of the Hindmarsh Place Making Master Plan.

Vision

“Hindmarsh is a destination to discover on Adelaide’s doorstep. From our distinctive heritage and industrial roots, we have grown into a thriving cultural hub with year-round arts, recreation, entertainment and sporting attractions.”

‘Illuminating Hindmarsh’ has received support from Council and a consultancy team has been engaged to develop a targeted, high quality, cohesive and energy efficient lighting plan that utilises the expressive potential of creative lighting to further enhance the image, safety and identity of the precinct.

The project scope includes three key elements:

  • Port Road Median - creative Boulevard lighting between Park Terrace and South Road.
  • Port Road Median - landscape lighting integrating existing or new landscape architecture within the median and building façades between Park Terrace and South Road.
  • Creative Wayfinding - creative applications of light and smart technology to support wayfinding and walkability within the precinct to connect Port Road to key destinations, including Holden Street Theatres, Coopers Stadium, the River Torrens and Bowden.

You can help shape our lighting design…

The proposed design includes sculptures integrated with light and digital interface that are organised around a narrative that is played out along the length of the median. Inspiration and photos for these stories are included on the map pins.
