Project Overview

West Beach Road is an important street, home to businesses and residents and providing a key connection to the coast.

The section between Tapleys Hill Road and Military Road was upgraded in 2019. We’re now looking at opportunities to improve the section between Military Road and Seaview Road.

We want to create a street that reflects West Beach’s coastal character, is greener and easier to move around, and is a welcoming place for people to visit, shop and spend time.

This is the first stage of consultation and there are no concept designs yet. Before we start developing ideas, we want to hear from the people who know West Beach Road best. We’d like to know:

  • What do you love about West Beach Road?
  • What could make it better?
  • What would make it safer and easier to walk or ride?
  • What types of trees, planting and greening would you like to see?
  • What would make you want to spend more time here?
  • What art, events or activities would you like to see?

Your feedback will help shape the ideas we develop for the street.

What we are looking at?

There are a range of opportunities, we're exploring, including:

  • making it safer and easier to walk and ride, including extending the shared-use path from Military Road to Coast Park
  • creating more space for trees and coastal planting
  • improving footpaths, kerbs and the road
  • creating more opportunities for outdoor dining
  • adding seating, improved lighting and clearer signage
  • improving the parking layout, particularly during busy beach periods
  • looking at ways to calm traffic, including narrower traffic lanes
  • making the street easier to use for people with wheelchairs, mobility aids and prams
  • improving pedestrian access and safety around the roundabouts
  • exploring opportunities for public art, events and other activities
