Charles Sturt is.... declaring war on signs!

Consultation has concluded

Our City is saturated with signs. Some of these play an important and necessary role. But many are out of date and no longer needed. Some signs have inconsistent wording or duplicate other controls already in place. Some signs also have a negative tone, communicating things that cannot be done, rather than encouraging enjoyment of our spaces.

The key focus of our 'war on signs' will be to remove surplus and unnecessary signs in order to reduce visual pollution. We will also be taking the opportunity to review and improve our messaging on signs with the aim of making them easier to understand and less ‘fun police’ in style, as well as locations of signs.

This war has come on the heels of a successful similar project run by Mosman Council in NSW, which has since been picked up by a number of councils across Australia. Experiences in areas across the world, such as New York, are also guiding our signage approach.

Trial Locations

  • Inlet Reserve, corner Military Road and Trimmer Parade, West Lakes
  • MJ McInerney Reserve, Day Terrace, Kilkenny
  • Albert Greenshields Reserve, Torrens Road, Ridleyton
  • Collins Reserve, Valetta Road, Fulham Gardens
