About Street Tree Planting

Our annual street planting program aims to ensure a tree-lined, covered and cool streetscape that, once mature, will create a consistent, attractive avenue of trees of a similar size, shape and look. We will be planting street trees in approximately 77 streets across our city between 1 April to 30 June 2026, with street planting preparation starting from March 2026. This is Stage 2 of our annual street planting program, with Stage 1 planting recently completed between July and September 2025.

Newly planted trees under our street tree planting program support our Tree Canopy Improvement Strategy and reaching our goal to deliver 25% tree canopy cover for our city by 2045.

Tree species voting

We recently invited selected streets in the 2025/26 Stage 2 planting program to vote on their preferred tree species for planting between April and June next year (2026). Our qualified staff selected two species options for your street to choose from based on your street environment, such as (but not limited to) specific growing conditions, biodiversity and infrastructure.

The results of voting for the selected streets have been confirmed and are now available to view in the table below.

Tree Species Results

The results of the tree species voting for each street that was invited to participate are listed below. The species with the majority votes is what was selected for planting. If there were no votes from the street, or there was no clear outcome (eg matching votes), delegated staff make the final selection based on the most suitable tree from the street from a biodiversity, canopy and street condition perspective. If you're interested to see the voting, you can view the table of results (refer PDF table on this page).

Can’t find your street?

Check for streets that may adjoin or run adjacent/parallel to your property (eg side-streets or rear-streets) as we may be planting on streets along the side or back of your property.

Table 2: Two species selected for planting in the street

The streets listed in this table will have a different tree species planted on each side of the street, because a smaller tree type has to be planted under the powerline (SAPN) side of the street. The streets in this table voted on their preferred tree species for each side of the street.

🌳 More on the nominated tree species

Find out more on the tree species nominated for planting in your street, below, by clicking on the 'View Species' link to access more information and images of the tree at different stages of maturity and in different growing conditions.

The tree species are sorted alphabetically from A to Z.

Note: We utilise other online resources to provide general species information and so you can view example tree imagery (Botanic Gardens of South Australia Plant Selector and Fleming's websites, as of October 2025). Images are for illustrative purposes only and may not accurately represent what the tree species will look like in your street as it grows or represent the accurate size at tree maturity. This is because trees grow differently (including its eventual size) dependent on the soil and growing conditions in your specific street environment. If you would like any clarity around the likely size of a tree species in your particular street, please contact us.

What now (before planting)?

Planting plans & feedback opportunity in early 2026

We will update the tree planting maps early in the new year with the other streets being included in the 2025/26 Stage 2 planting program, including the tree species that is nominated for planting. For now, you can view the draft planting maps on our Street Tree Planting webpage on our website to see the intended locations for planting. These planting plans are subject to underground service location which will occur closer to planting.

You can use the map to search for your address or a specific location to see the intended locations for new tree planting, removal, or tree removal and replacement. Property verges without a 'new tree planting' marker have most likely been assessed as not being suitable for, or able to have a street tree. You're welcome to contact us to find out why. Please note that the planting locations and treatments are subject to change as a result of feedback and underground service location, which will occur next year (2026).

In late-January/early-February 2026, following the update to the planting map, all streets - including yours - will receive a notification flyer to your mailbox or registered postal address about the upcoming planting.

Preparation for planting and underground service location will begin in March 2026. Tree planting preparation includes tree and stump removal, digging spaces for new trees, and marking the kerb with tree planting locations. Our contactors will start planting trees in streets from 1 April through to (approx) end-June to take advantage of cooler, wetter weather.

Have something to tell us?

You will be invited to share property information or planting requests in February 2026

If you have concerns, requests or comments about your property as it relates to the proposed tree planting, you will have the opportunity to share feedback with us after you receive the advanced notice mentioned above.

All properties will receive a 'Growing Green' street tree planting flyer direct to the letterbox or property postal address no later than early February 2026. At this time, you will have approximately 3-4 weeks to share anything important with us. This might include any details about your property we should be aware of, a request about planting location in the verge, or extenuating personal or property circumstances we may need to be aware of. Staff will review and consider the feedback by the beginning of March 2026. Planting plans will then be finalised and site preparation will begin.

Feedback can be submitted to us using the contact details on this page at any time, but instructions will be provided in the notification flyer you will receive in late-Jan/early Feb 2026, closer to the time of planting.

You cannot opt out of tree planting. Unsupported requests for 'No Tree' are not considered, and leaf fall, debris, tree mess or concerns about private property damage are not reasons we would agree to not to plant a tree in the verge.

You can find out more information on the Street Planting Program webpage or by reviewing our Tree Policy.
