Thank you for participating in this engagement!

We have reviewed the feedback that was received during the consultation period and prepared a report on the community engagement outcomes. This report will be presented to the Asset Management Committee on 15 May 2023, seeking a decision on the request to name this new reserve in Seaton "Karra Reserve".

We will be recommending Council approve the request and name the new reserve "Karra Reserve". Find out more about the results of the consultation and next steps, here.

More about the reserve naming

The reserve is located between Glenburnie Street and Matthews Avenue in Seaton. It will be 2665m2 in area and will be developed and handed over to Council as part of the Renewal SA redevelopment of the surrounding land.

Location of Karra Reserve in the new development between Matthews Avenue and Glenburnie Street in Seaton, bordered by Frederick Road and Lark Avenue

The word ‘Karra’ means ‘River Redgum’ in Kaurna language. The River Redgum has a place of importance in the history of the Kaurna community.

This name is proposed for the reserve becuase it reflects the significant redgum that will feature in the reserve and will align with the name of the new road to be constructed next to the reserve, called "Karra Avenue".

Our commitment to retain this significant river redgum tree is what determined the location of the reserve within the new development.

Under our Reserve Naming Policy, Council will consider a request to name or rename a reserve. If approved, we will undertake consultation to understand the views of the local area, and the broader community should they have an interest.

The outcomes of the consultation will be considered by the Council in making its final decision on the naming of the reserve. This decision is likely to be made in April/May. Other components that will inform decision-making will include the weight and merit of the initial request, expert advice, other historical, cultural, social, environmental, or economic factors, any other suggested names in the consultation process, as well as Council's discretionary view.

If the community does not support the proposed reserve name, the Council will consider this in its decision, including any other proposed names, history or feedback provided during consultation. The final naming decision will rest with Council.
