About the Project

We are taking a closer look at Mitton Avenue, Henley Beach, a busy and valued local street that connects homes, schools, the Western Hospital and local businesses.

The road assets are due for renewal, and with more people walking, driving and visiting the area, we’re exploring ways to make Mitton Avenue safer, more accessible and vibrant.

Your feedback is shaping Mitton Avenue

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the first stage of consultation in December on safety improvements for Mitton Avenue, Henley Beach.

We heard from residents, businesses and visitors about what matters most, including safety, accessibility, greenery, and creating a local street that feels more comfortable and inviting.

We're now moving to the next stage of consultation.

What’s happening now?

Using your feedback, we’ve developed a series of example images and ideas that show what improvements to Mitton Avenue could look like.

These are not final designs. They are intended to explore possibilities and help us understand what the community supports, what concerns you may have, and which ideas should be prioritised.

Your feedback will help inform the next stage of work, where we will review the feasibility of these ideas through the detailed design process and prepare a draft concept plan.

What we’d like your feedback on:

We’re inviting you to review a range of example images that respond to what you told us.

These include ideas for:

  • Safer and more visible crossings
  • Raised intersections and crossings to help slow vehicle traffic
  • Changes to the street layout to help calm traffic and improve visibility
  • Greener streets with more trees
  • Improved paths and accessibility
We want to understand:
  • What you like or don’t like about these ideas
  • What feels right for Mitton Avenue
  • Any concerns or opportunities we may have missed
What happens next?

Review ideas → Develop concept plans → Share for further feedback

You’re invited to review the example images and tell us what you think. Your feedback will help shape draft concept designs, which will be shared with the community for further feedback before designs are finalised.

Previous Consultation

This project began following a budget bid, following feedback from residents about pedestrian and traffic safety concerns.

The businesses along Mitton Avenue are popular with locals and attract visitors. We want to ensure the street supports everyone who lives, works and spends time here.

What are we looking at?

We’re collecting pedestrian and traffic data and seeking community feedback to help shape the vision for Mitton Avenue.

Your input will help guide future improvements and funding priorities for:

  • Safety, access and comfort for people walking, riding and using mobility aids
  • Safety and access for people driving cars, buses and trucks
  • Streetscape design, landscaping, outdoor dining, bicycle and car parking
  • Improved climate resilience
  • Night-time safety and lighting
What might change

Some early ideas being explored include:

  • A raised intersection at Mitton Avenue and Belfast Street to calm traffic and improve walkability
  • Pedestrian crossings near Belfast and Margaret Streets
  • Wider footpaths and improvements to crossing ramps
  • Increased tree canopy, biodiversity and permeable surfaces
  • Enhanced public spaces with art, seating and landscaping
  • Adjustments to car parking and new bicycle parking

These ideas will be explored further once we hear from you!

What we heard and how we are responding

Community Engagement was open from 12 November to 3 December 2025.

We had 39 online contributions, with over 25 attending our community drop-in session at the local cafe on 29 November.

Overall, community feedback was strong, consistent and safety driven. Residents overwhelmingly identified traffic safety, visibility and parking pressures as key concerns, particularly at intersections and during school peak times. There is strong support for interventions that prioritise pedestrian safety, improved crossings and speed reduction.

Key Themes
Safety and Access for walking or riding (especially for school children)
  • Convert the school crossing to a raised crossing, to slow traffic and improve crossing safety
  • Priority crossing to cross Mitton Avenue (between Belfast and Shannon Street)
  • New ramps to cross Mitton Avenue at Webb, Margaret and Bollingbroke
  • Continuous path treatment at Margaret Street (to improve access to school and calm traffic)
  • Wider paths (as part of future path renewal projects)
Street trees and greenery
  • New street tree infill planting along existing verges and within new widened nature strips
Calm Vehicle Traffic
  • Raised intersection at Belfast Street (this location is chosen due to stormwater drainage considerations)
  • Raised crossing at Fulham Gardens Primary School
  • Kerb buildouts slow drivers at intersections and visually narrow the road, calming traffic
Improve visibility for drivers turning from side roads
  • Building out the nature strip at the intersections, will mean that drivers can safely pull further forward to see oncoming traffic. The buildouts will also prevent cars from being parked too close to intersections.
Parking Availability
  • Concerns were raised about parking too close to intersections. Building out the kerbs will prevent this from happening, making it clear where parking is allowed.
  • The proposed new crossing to cross Mitton Avenue between Belfast and Shannon Street will remove approximately 6 on street parking spaces, further improving visibility when turning from Belfast Street.
  • Widening the nature strips at intersections will not impact parking
  • Widened nature strips along the street will replace small portions of the parking lane with greenery
