Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the proposed improvements for Gosport Street and Baker Street.

Your input has helped us better understand local priorities and refine the design to improve safety and accessibility in the area.

Community Responses:

We received 16 responses during the consultation period, including:

• 6 written submissions
• 10 online survey responses
• Around 11 additional comments from residents and interest groups, including Bike Adelaide.

Community responses showed stronger support for Option 1, while some residents also supported aspects of Option 2.

Preferred options:

• Option 1: Kerb and footpath widening with ramps, indented parking bay and speed cushions: 8 responses (50%).
• Option 2: Kerb and footpath widening with ramps and speed cushions, including St John intersection change: 4 responses (25%)
• Other suggestions: 3 responses (19%)
• Do not support either option: 1 response (6%)

Some respondents suggested combining elements of both options to deliver the best outcome.

Key themes from community feedback:

Safety around the school zone: Many respondents supported improvements that make it safer for children and families, including better drop-off arrangements and lower speed limits during school hours.

Traffic and congestion: Residents noted that Gosport Street becomes congested during school drop-off and pick-up times. Suggestions included improved parking layout and reviewing nearby street traffic arrangements.

Walking and cycling: Several submissions highlighted the importance of safer crossings, wider footpaths and improved facilities for cyclists.

Intersection safety: Some respondents raised concerns about visibility and safety at the Baker Street / Gosport Street intersection, suggesting clearer signage and line marking.

Trees and streetscape: Feedback highlighted the importance of protecting existing trees where possible and maintaining a greener streetscape.

Road condition and drainage: A small number of comments noted drainage issues and road surface deterioration that could be addressed as part of future works.

Final Outcomes

Following consultation, Option 1 received the highest level of support from residents. Based on this feedback, we further refined the concept design and spoke with several residents directly impacted by the proposed changes.

As a result of these discussions, the design has been slightly adjusted on Gosport Street, including relocating the proposed zebra crossing closer to St John Avenue to improve safety and access.

Scope of Works

Gosport Street (Baker Street to Exeter Terrace) The project will include:

Reinstatement of ‘No Stopping’ restrictions during school peak times:

> 8:30am – 9:30pm
> 2:30pm – 4:00pm

• Road resurfacing between Baker Street and Exeter Terrace.
• Reconstruction of existing kerb and gutter on both sides of the street.
• Footpath widening to approximately 1.5 metres adjacent to the new indented parking area.
• Kerb widening and verge expansion in selected locations.
• Installation of a new 6m metre wide zebra crossing with kerb ramps.
• Installation of new pedestrian kerb ramps.
• Construction of a new indented ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone accommodating five vehicles. This will require the removal of several existing juvenile trees.

Baker Street (McQuillan Ave to Torrens Road)

• Road resurfacing between McQuillan and Torrens Road.
• Reconstruction of existing kerb and gutter on both sides of the street.
• New pedestrian kerb ramps and renewal of existing ramps.
• Gosport/ Baker kerb widened and verge expanded.

Construction Timing

Construction is currently planned for the 2026/27 financial year. A contractor has not yet been appointed. However, it is anticipated that works will commence in late 2026.

Residents directly impacted by the works will receive further notification from the appointed contractor closer to the construction date.
