Hybrid Tree Planting Option Supported

30 June 2025

Following two stages of community consultation in August/September 2024 and March 2025 on a concept plan and tree planting options for the Gibson Street Streetscape Upgrade, the hybrid tree planting solution has been supported. Head to the engagement home page for more information on these consultations and the early stages of the project.

The hybrid solution responded to a majority community preference for more variety in tree species, and large canopied trees and the retention of existing healthy trees in Gibson Street, where possible. This planting solution will retain some of the existing bottlebrush trees and remove others, and plant new Crepe Myrtle trees and Chinese Pistachio trees (where space allows for this larger tree type). You can find out more about the engagement feedback received specifically on the hybrid proposal feedback in the engagement report (link below).

The concept plan is now finalised, and construction is planned in the current financial year (between now and 30 June 2026). Residents will receive more specific construction details from the appointed contractor completing the works, closer to the time.

What next?

Overall Tree Works

Tree Removals: 18 Bottlebrush trees will be removed (all from the eastern side and one from the western side).

Trees Retained (kept): 38 trees will be retained, including Bottlebrush trees on the western side and the majority of trees north of Hawker Street.

New Trees: Up to 54 new trees will be planted, consisting of 41 Crepe Myrtles and 13 Chinese Pistachio trees (in wider verges).

Tree removals will likely occur near the start of the project, with new tree planting when the footpath and kerb construction reach completion.

The trees will then be watered and maintained by the City of Charles Sturt until they are established or reach maturity.

Construction is planned in the 2025/26 financial year, between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.

Residents and stakeholders will be notified before construction starts, with details and access or movement restrictions, from Council's appointed contractor.

Now that project consultation has concluded, please visit the Major Projects page on the City of Charles Sturt public website for all future updates (from 1 July 2025 onwards):
